About The ECT* Doctoral Training Programme

How to apply

The 2007 ECT* Doctral Training Programme will be devoted to "Nuclear structure and reactions". It will be run in the spirit of previous programmes of this type at ECT*, with daily lectures by recognized experts as well as one-week workshops. The aim of the lectures is to give an overview of many-body techniques that are used in nuclear physics, including issues that are at the forefront of present-day research such as the nature of the nucleonic interactions, the nuclear density functional far from stability or the coupling to continuum states. The topics that will be covered include mean-field methods, the nuclear shell model, symmetry methods and the physics of exotic nuclei. Connections to other fields of physics will be emphasized, with lectures on nuclear astrophysics, nuclear aspects of fundamental symmetries and open many-body quantum systems. Nuclear reaction models and the use of these to extract nuclear structure information from nuclear reaction measurements will also be covered.

Students will have ample opportunity to interact with the lecturers outside the formal lecture period and in addition ECT* staff will be on hand to assist in tutorials and problem sessions. Students will have access to the computing facilities of ECT* and will be given the time and opportunity to continue work on their PhD project.

The programme will extend over three months beginning on March 8, 2007. It is aimed at students who are in the process of obtaining a PhD in the area of theoretical or experimental low-energy nuclear physics. Enquiries can be addressed to: Piet Van Isacker (isacker@ganil.fr) or Muhsin Harakeh (harakeh@kvi.nl).
