Interaction of swift charged particles with condensed media: A short review and recent simulations

When a swift charged projectile moves through a target it undergoes different interactions, which result mainly in energy loss and deviation from its trajectory. By studying the angular and energy distribution of a projectile beam after leaving the target it is possible to understand the nature of the target as well as the interaction processes between the projectile and the target constituents. Besides gaining fundamental knowledge, it is also feasible to analyse and modify the properties of the materials under study.
In this talk I will introduce the main interactions (elastic scattering, ionisation and excitation, electron capture and loss, etc.) that occur when an energetic charged projectile moves through a condensed phase target. By using all the pertinent interactions in a detailed Monte Carlo and/or Molecular Dynamics simulation code, we obtain quantities, such as energy or spatial distributions of the projectiles, which are relevant for proton beam therapy, ion beam lithography and irradiation-induced damage in graphene.
