Simone Taioli
- ECT* Senior Researcher
Simone Taioli is a senior scientist at ECT* and Head of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Computational Science. He graduated summa cum laude in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Bologna in 2000. Dr Taioli received two PhDs: one in Nuclear Engineering (Bologna, 2004) for developing a theoretical method to simulate Auger spectra of molecules and solids, and a second in Physics (University of Trento, 2013) for studying the nucleosynthesis of chemical elements in evolved stars using methods from atomic and condensed matter physics. As a postdoctoral researcher, he held fellowships at UCL (London, UK) and the University of Sheffield, where he worked on first-principles simulations of the electronic, optical, and thermodynamic properties of materials, including under extreme conditions. He has also held visiting positions at Sorbonne Université, Charles University in Prague, École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, UCL, Gdańsk University of Technology, and the University of Murcia. Dr Taioli has received five habilitations as Associate and Full Professor of Chemistry and Condensed Matter Physics in both France and Italy. He has also held professorships at Peter the Great Polytechnic University of St Petersburg and Gdańsk University of Technology. He has taught courses in many-body physics and scattering theory.
His current research interests range from developing novel computational many-body techniques for studying condensed matter systems to relativistic methods for estimating nuclear decay in astrophysical scenarios, hadron therapy for cancer treatment, and materials for the next generation of advanced nuclear reactors.
