Nuclear physics is a mature field of research that has reached a high level of sophistication, in keeping with the complexity of the nuclear many-body problem and the many facets of the nuclear phenomena. The importance of the interplay between theory and experiment is well known. In order to discover new physics, one cannot simply rely on the information in the scientific literature but must model the known processes with controlled theoretical uncertainties. To give simple examples of this, if new spectroscopic data have to be unveiled, the mechanism of the reactions that populate the states must be under control; or, conversely, new reaction mechanisms can be discovered if the states of the involved nuclei are known.
Under the project EURO-LABS, the EU has granted the installation and commissioning of a “virtual access (VA) facility”, called Theo4Exp (https://institucional.us.es/theo4exp/), so that experimentalists can access software and data in a user-friendly way and benefit for the design and simulation of new experiments as well as interpretation of available data. The facility can also foster mutual understanding and new collaborations among theorists.
The scope of the short, hands-on workshop, is to increase the reach of the Theo4Exp facility to a larger audience, educate students or interested scientists on how to use it, and gather new insight through discussion with the participants; all this can help in (i) optimising the facility and its access, (ii) increasing the number of options in terms of programs and data sets. The workshop will be open and a wide range of participants from different countries will be envisioned, to attract a large audience (also outside the EUROLABS project partners)
